Non-Fiction Post of the Week: Let's Talk about Love

Let's Talk about Love: A Journey to the End of Taste by Carl Wilson 2007

Carl Wilson, columnist for the Globe & Mail, does not like the music of Celine Dion. He calls her music "bland monotony raised to a pitch of obnoxious bombast". However, in his book, Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste, he tries to be fair and re-examines his attitude. First of all he analyzes why he does not like her music, although she is one of the most popular recording artists in the world. He delves into her background and her environment, both geographic and musical. Next, he examines in depth the factors that contribute to how people form their tastes in music and other forms of expression and also to what extent cultural biases influence out tastes. By the end of his analysis, he is not completely converted to liking Celine's music, but he tolerates it and has a great deal more understanding of why other people like her.

I'm always amazed when people take the time to write about something they don't like. I haven't read the book, so I'm not assuming that the author is being negative or complaining. I'm very happy to read from this summary that Mr. Wilson used his writing to self-analyse his own preferences toward music. Fascinating!
