1st Pick of the Week!

The Rossiter File is the second of Thomas Rendell Curran's mystery books set in Newfoundland in the post-war period, before Newfoundland became Canada's 10th province. A group of boys commit an act of vandalism and run down a steep, narrow alley, to escape a pursuing constable's grasp. A few minutes later, the constable finds the body of an elderly man. Accident or murder? A medical examiner concludes that it was murder and the hunt for the killer begins. Inspector Eric Stride, who is assigned to the case, and his team collect as much data as possible about the victim, Samuel Rossiter. Eventually, their investigations lead them to the killer, but not before they sift through 30 years of the history of the island and unearth many secrets about some of the island's leading citizens. The storyline in itself is interesting, however, I found the history of the island and the way of life of the inhabitants extremely fascinating as well. There are references to Joey Smallwood and other characters who were instrumental in Newfoundland becoming part of Canada. I hope Curran continues this series!
