Fiction Pick of the Week: The Disappeared
The Disappeared by Kim Echlin 2009
A love story that spans two countries and two cultures set during the genocide in Cambodia. Anne Greves first falls in love with Serey, a Cambodian exile, as a teenager in Montreal. Their intense relationship is put on hold when the Vietnamese enter Cambodia and the borders are reopened. Serey, who has been unable to contact anyone at home for years, returns to the horrors of Cambodia in search of his family. Anne thinks she sees Serey on a news report and travels to Phnom Penh hoping to find him. The realities of Pol Pot’s rule and the cruelty of the Khmer Rouge set the back drop for the reuniting of the lovers and the beginning of further tragedy.
Nominated for the 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize!

this sounds like a totally interesting read on a culture/history that i know very little about! thanks for the heads-up.
Someone told me that the author, Kim Echlin, is originally from Aldershot!
This book was also beautifully reviewed in the May sessions of Beans 'n Books. The theme was 'Secrets and lies', which fit well with the theme of the book on a political, cultural and emotional level.
Thanks for visiting Aimee! Oh, I didn't know the author was from Burlington - how fun!
