Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
In this first book in the series set in the early 20th century, we meet Maisie Dobbs, a smart, precocious psychologist and investigator as she solves mysteries at a time when women are slowly gaining rights and independence. Her case is seemingly simple, but grows into one that is more personal to her than she would have ever expected. Something isn’t right at a mysterious ‘retreat’ for those who were wounded and disfigured in the first world war. During the course of the story we also learn Maisie’s personal story of how she started out as a servant but was able to become an independent investigator. This story has a wonderful flare and brings the period to life.
Also available in downloadable audio book, book on cd and large print!

I agree - I love the Maisie Dobbs books. They're amazingly well researched and historically accurate, but always done with a very light hand, and Jacqueline Winspear follows in the steps of the great Golden Age mystery writers by creating not only a fascinating plot, but also rich characters with a lot to say about life.
Thanks for sharing... yes, these books are very popular, obviously for good reason!
