My Pick of the Week!
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. This first novel took the author ten years to write. It is a wonderful mix of historical fiction and thriller. For the non-historian much can be learned about European history both medieval and 20th century. The story begins in 1972 Amsterdam when a 16-year-old girl discovers a book in her father’s library. In the book she finds yellowing letters, the first which begins, “My dear and unfortunate successor …” Unable to forget about the letters she eventually asks her father Paul, a diplomat, about the secret letters. What unfolds is a story written in three different time periods, the 1930s, the 1950s and the 1970s. Throughout the book there are searches for historians, friends, fathers, mothers and Dracula’s tomb. Dracula is the evil at the center of the book and his undead “librarians” will stop at nothing to protect him and his tomb. Although a lengthy book, the book doesn’t drag and is entertaining right to the final page!
