Non-Fiction Pick of the Week:Slow Death by Rubber Duck

Slow Death by Rubber Duck: how the toxic chemistry of everyday life affects our health
by Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie 2009

Whether it’s bisphenol A in baby bottles, drinking glasses, or hockey helmet visors or PVCs in your shower curtain, lotions, or colognes, “the dose makes the poison”, which is the basic tenet of toxicology. Smith and Lourie are two professional Canadians who think we should all take a good look around at the over-triclosanitization of our world. This book is quite an eye-opener and probably should be mandatory reading for all of us, especially if we think we know all about toxicity in our environment. “Today’s most serious toxins lurk in the most private recess of our homes.” The last chapter on “Detox” and “Resource Guide/Further Reading” contains lists of websites and books which support the message of this book!
