Non-Fiction Pick of the Week: Nurture Shock

Nurture Shock
by P.O. Bronson and Ashley Merryman 2009

This book has been described as “groundbreaking” and revolutionary in its ideas or “new thinking about children”. The first chapter states that parents will ruin their child if they continually praise the child. That is not a new idea, nor is the idea that a powerful influence in children’s lives is their sibling(s) or that much of the new “jump start” ideas to increase intelligence in babies really doesn’t work. However, the authors do offer many other suggestions, e.g. it is o.k. for parents to argue/display conflict in front of their children so long as the children see the parents make up. Whether you agree or disagree, it makes for an interesting read.

Recently Dr. Vincent Lam reviewed this book, and he said he enjoyed reading it not only as a parent, but a researcher as well.
