Non-Fiction Pick of the Week: Julie and Julia

Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell 2005
Julie and Julia is the true story of New Yorker Julie Powell’s attempt to recreate recipes from Julia Child’s famous book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking – this was to take place over 365 days. In the end she manages 524 recipes, quite a feat considering her tiny kitchen and the fact that she holds down a full time job. She originally started her cooking project by documenting it in her blog, and it was so popular that she eventually wrote this book. Although Powell never met Julia Child, the venerable chef’s spirit is present throughout the book. Foodies will enjoy Julie’s hilarious stories of tackling marrowbones, cooking offal and wrestling with aspics and soufflés. The reader will find this book a unique opportunity to join one woman in her attempt to change her life and have a laugh along the way.

**Not a new book, but place your holds now as this one is very popular due to the movie version starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams which is currently in theatres.** (The movie was great too, by the way!!!)

I listened to this book on my MP3 player (downloaded it from the library!), and the author narrates it herself. Julie Powell is hilarious as she tells her story with enthusiasm. I'm glad I heard it in her own voice, as I don't know if others could have done it justice.

After reading this review and seeing previews for the movie I had to read this book. It was great and I can't wait to borrow the DVD from the library as well! I always like to see the changes and differences between the book and the film version.
