Non-Fiction Pick of the Week: Her Last Death

Her Last Death: A Memoir by Susanna Sonnenberg 2008

Her Last Death is a memoir unlike any other I’ve read before, but then again Susanna Sonnenberg’s mother Daphne is a mother unlike any mother most have us have ever known! Her open sexuality , drug use and chronic lying form the foundations of Susanna’s childhood. Daphne is able to seduce anyone and everyone including her daughter after letting her down time and time again. With Daphne as a role model, Susanna begins down the same path in her adulthood, but she then realizes that this is not the life she desires for herself and it certainly is not what she wants for her own children. Her Last Death is not without humour, but it is also quite dark and disturbing. An absolutely compelling memoir that I found very difficult to put down!
