I finally got the chance to read The Book of Negroes last week-- what a wonderful novel! It has been reviewed for this blog already, but I wanted to mention it as I recently had the opportunity to attend a discussion and book reading by author Lawrence Hill. I always find it fascinating to hear an author speak about what goes into writing a work such as this one. It was especially touching to hear that the main character of the novel, Aminata, had been named after his own daughter. He also read from his book Any Known Blood, which was published in 1997. I know we have many, many people on the holds list for The Book of Negroes, but the list for Any Known Blood is considerably shorter, and it sounded very entertaining in the reading, so I'll be checking that one out next! And if you're reading The Book of Negroes, don't forget to have a look at the Acknowledgements section in the back where our very own Burlington Public Library is mentioned. How exciting!
