Tuesday's Pick: The September Society
The September Society by Charles Finch 2008
If you like a nice cozy British mystery, why not try The September Society by Charles Finch? The story opens with a frantic widow visiting sleuth Charles Lennox in the middle of the night because her son has not returned to his room at Oxford University for the last two days. Lady Annabelle does not want to go to the local police because she fears they will laugh at her. Lennox goes to Oxford and finds the following clues in the student’s room “a frayed piece of string about two feet long, … a half of a pulp fried tomato, a fountain pen, and lastly a card, which said on the front The September Society; he turned it and was surprised to discover on the back two pen lines one pink, one black, forming an x.”These clues are what Lennox has to work with to try and find out what happened to George Payson. A real page turner! Finch’s first novel that introduced his sleuth Lennox is entitled Beautiful Blue Death.

This is quite a neat idea that you use your psychic powers to decide if a book is good or not. Have you ever got it wrong and do you read the book even if you know it is going to be bad?
Hi Chris! First of all thank you for your comment - it's an interesting question! I guess we should clarify that by "psychic" we mean that we strive to uncover the literary desires of our blog readers and library customers in order to connect them with the perfect book. All the reviews on the site have been written after the books have been read, however. I know as librarians, it would be wonderful for us to be able to predict whether a book is good or bad before reading it... it would certainly save a lot of time! :) Cheers!
