Wednesday's Pick!
October is a small quiet book by award winning Canadian author Richard Wright. It is a coming of age story set in WWII Perce, Quebec alongside a contemporary story of a man dealing with death. James Hillyer, a retired professor of Victorian literature, has flown to England to be with his daughter who has recently been diagnosed with cancer the same disease that took his wife a few years earlier. While walking down a London street he meets a man, Gabriel Fontaine, who he encountered as a young boy while summering in the Gaspe region. Gabriel is very ill and asks James to accompany him on a life altering journey. While preparing for the journey, James recounts the summer he met Gabriel and all the conflicting emotions that came with it. Wright slowly draws the reader into a fine story of love and loss.
