My 2nd Pick of the Week!

What could make a young man from an affluent family in the eastern states want to get rid of most of his worldy possessions and travel into the northern wilderness to live off the land? This is exactly what Christopher McCandless did in 1992. Unfortunately, he was found dead four months later in an abandoned city bus in a remote area of Alaska. How did he die? How did he live until his untimely end? Why did he go into the wilderness ill-equipped? These are the questions Jon Krakauer ( author of 'Into Thin Air') sets out to investigate in Into the Wild . Using his journal entries ( on the back of an edible plant guide), his rolls of film, an SOS note, and personal accounts of people he had met along the way, Krakauer attempts to piece together the last two years of McCandless' life. Krakauer parallels his own adventurous youth with McCandless, creating a moving, heart-breaking drama bringing McCandless' character to life and perhaps giving us a little more understanding of his idealistic search for the meaning of life.

Let me know how the book compares to the movie. The library also has this title on DVD and on Book on CD. It is also available through our new Overdrive Downloadable Book Service!

I listened to Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" as a book on Tape and was blown away by it. However, I was disappointed by the movie made of this book. The movie was slow and plodding. McCandless was not a sympathetic character at all. I lost interest and dozed off.
