My Pick of the Week!
If you like "chick-lit" type of book then you must read Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsane. This is a story about men and women who fall in and out of love with a Saudi twist. The story is constructed using emails that chronicle the lives of four young women who live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
What I liked most about the novel was how the women and men seemed to live in two worlds. In their modern world they used the Internet, cell phones and text messaging to pursue their love interests. In the old world their families were responsible for selecting brides for the men. The women in the old world had to behave in a prescribed manner in order to attract a suitable husband.
This book provided an interesting glimpse into the role that marriage tradition plays in Saudi society. Please remember that this is a book of fiction and who knows what is true fact and what is pure fiction. This puzzle is left up to the reader to ascertain.
What have you been reading on these cold winter days, let me know!
