My Pick of the Week!

A Thousand Splendid Suns is Khaled Hosseini’s second novel. I have been looking forward to his newest book after reading The Kite Runner in 2003 and it is certainly worth the wait. Set the 1970’s and spanning thirty years in the turbulent history of Afghanistan, Hosseini tells the story of a complicated friendship between two women who are both facing personal challenges living in war-torn Kabul. Miriam and Laila are thrown together unexpectantly as Laila becomes the second wife to Miriams’ cruel and violent husband. The women slowly build a strong friendship and become allies against the tyranny of their husband and the brutalities of the world around them. The characters are unforgettable; both struggling to stay alive with their children while the war rages on.
