My Pick of the Week!
In her wise and witty memoir, Animal , Vegetable, Miracle , Barbara Kingsolver makes a convincing argument to feed her family of four locally and in season for a year, thus reducing the "petroleum miles" involved in bringing food to the table. To begin this yearlong food adventure the family journeyed from the drought stricken outskirts of Tuscon, Arizona where all food had to be trucked a distance of 1,500 miles to a farm in rural Virginia where they grew heirloom vegetables and raised chickens and heirloom turkeys. Everything was eaten fresh, canned, frozen, or pickled for future use. It was a year of teamwork but the bonds of family, friends and community grew stronger as a result. The lesson learned along the way is that all of us can make changes no matter how small, to the way we eat. Buying food from nearby farmers' markets or growing our own we can make a difference to our world.
