My Pick of the Week!

Here's another great book you'll want to read!

There's an exciting, new, local author on the horizon, and her name is Jennifer McCartney! She's from Ancaster, and her first novel is called Afloat. It's about an older woman named Bell who is waiting for a mysterious visitor. While she's waiting, she remembers a particular summer that she spent working on the prestigious Mackinac Island in her 20s, where she met her first love, met lots of different people, and felt free with the possibilities that life could offer her. As a mature woman, we find out how Bell's life actually turned out, and we continue to wonder about her visitor, who it is, why this person is visiting her now, and what, if anything, it has to do with her past on Mackinac. Jennifer McCartney's style has been compared to that of Margaret Atwood, but it reminded me more of Margaret Laurence because of the use of flashbacks and smooth descriptions. A great read, and worth checking out!
